Hello everyone!
I’m working on a new presentation and would love your thoughts on this.
When thinking about networking as a professional on this age of social media and instant communication, what comes to mind? Do you have any thoughts or tips on how to best network today?
Do you actively network on LinkedIn when you’re not necessarily looking for a job?
PM4TM Networking on LinkedIn is my first choice for everything from getting answers to identifying trends. Twitter is mostly Spam; Facebook is becoming unusable. LinkedIn, faults and all, is the best social media platform for people with professional aspirations.
Hi, PracticingITPM Thanks for that input. Would you share with us what your goals are with LinkedIn and how you are using it? #PMOT
PM4TM PracticingITPM I post discussions related to my blog posts in several key groups, and comment on the discussions stated by others. When my book is published, I’ll announce it on LinkedIn. #pmot
PracticingITPM Great. That’s the way to go. What will your book be about?

PracticingITPM It sounds like a great book. Let me know if I can help you with the launch in any way!
I think Google+ is the easiest and most open platform to use for networking. Facebook doesn’t really allow you to add people when they are not part of your network in some way, I got banned from Facebook for talking to too many people who I hadn’t met before. Twitter is ok but you are limited by the amount you can say and that it isn’t always private, also that you can’t see a lot about the other people on their profiles. Linkedin groups are good but still find there is a barrier between myself and the world unless I have spoken to them before. I don’t accept invitations from people who I’ve never spoken to anywhere else, it seems a bit weird. Google+ freely lets you circle whoever you want, send messages, links, photos, video hangouts and stuff. I don’t feel like I’m invading someone’s personal space if I send them a message to say hello and ask them to tell me about their job or interests!
Google+ is becoming my preferred platform. It has the best potential for calibrating the interactions via circles and communities.
I’m starting to see LinkedIn more as a place to keep online profile/resume – a reference for people who want to know a little more about me.
Twitter doesn’t work for me. It feels like a bunch of people shouting out into the interwebs with a few side conversations. IMO, most of what Twitter does, G+ does better because of the circles and communities.
Facebook is strictly personal.
Charles Ben Ami Charles, thanks for that. I tend to agree with you. I find that this all depends on niche though. For my PM contacts, there’s a lot of interaction on Twitter and G+. For construction professionals, they seem to be more on LinkedIn.
Facebook is more of a personal place for me as well.
Have you seen our G+ community?
PM4TM Charles Ben Ami I surprised myself. I thought I was already a member. I have corrected that now 🙂
Charles Ben Ami PM4TM Looking forward to interacting with you there. For those reading, check out http://pmforthemassescom.mystagingwebsite.com/google
